Children need the opportunity to handle beautiful things so they will learn to value them. They need to fall in love with objects made from natural sources. They need to experience the sadness that comes from a broken object of beauty. I know it can be tricky to find just the right bowl or jug, but the dollar store isn’t your only option. Garage sales, thrift stores and antique stands are good options because they usually have lots of old stuff made from natural substances. As the new school year approaches, take a good look at your practical life materials. Make sure you are giving your students beautiful, fragile things to work with. Then they will be inspired by beauty and learn to value it!
